REDCAR SEES 900 CHILDREN GATHER FOR 2KM FUN RUN

900 PRIMARY school children came together at Redcar Rugby Club to take part in a popular mass running event, organised by the running initiative GO Run For Fun.

On Thursday 20 September 2018, the event saw its 265,000th runner, with GO Run For Fun drawing closer to its target of getting 280,000 children participating in its events by the end of 2018.

British athlete Rabah Yousif, who won gold at the European Athletic Championships in 2014 in the 4x400m relay, joined the primary school children at the event, taking part in a Q&A, sounding the claxon at the start line and cheering the runners on.

Rabah said: “I always like to get involved with local sports activities and events, and it’s so important for children to take part and stay active. These kind of events provide a great opportunity for kids to find out what they are good at and enjoy, helping to shape their future.”

Back in June 2018, Redcar schools attended a GO Run For Fun Health & Wellbeing event, where two pupils from each school were trained as Special Agents with the mission to get their school healthy and active. The event welcomed the Special Agents back to discuss how their six missions went ahead of the run and what exciting ideas they had to complete their mission.

In an attempt to encourage children between 5 and 11 years old to get active, GO Run For Fun has been working with primary schools and councils across the UK to organise 2km fun runs for children to get involved with.

The programme is supported by INEOS, a multinational company headquartered in London, with health and fitness at the heart of its ethos.

INEOS Chairman, Jim Ratcliffe, is deeply passionate about running. He said: “It has never been more important to support young people in leading healthier, more active lives.

“GO Run for Fun and The Daily Mile have been making a positive impact on the health and well-being of hundreds of thousands of children in the UK and beyond for the last four years. We are very proud to support these two initiatives and everyone who runs in them.”

A number of volunteers from INEOS Seal Sands also attended and helped out at the event.
