OLYMPIC MEDALLIST DUO SUPPORT 1000 PRIMARY PUPILS IN NORTHWICH RUN

NORTHWICH primary schools came together for a mass fun run on Wednesday 18 September 2019 with Olympic gymnasts Beth Tweddle and Amy Tinkler attending the event as special guests.

Over 1000 pupils aged between 5 and eleven arrived at Moss Farm to take on the 2-kilometre run organised by GO Run For Fun and a number of local primary schools joined in.

Beth Tweddle and Amy Tinkler each led a warm up routine for the morning and afternoon events, cheering the participants when they started the run and throughout the route. The gymnasts also hosted a question and answer session after the events so the children could pick their brains about how they started their athletic journeys and what they enjoy the most about their sport.

Beth Tweedle said: “This is an amazing opportunity for everyone and I wish this was something I had when I was at school. I started Gymnastics when I was very young, I just loved flipping around all over the place, I did other sports in school but I’ve always done Gymnastics.”

Amy Tinkler added: “Everyone looks amazing today! I wish I had a pink t-shirt… I’ve always loved gymnastics – I started when I was 2 so I’ve been doing it for seventeen years now. Try as many sports as you can, there’ll be at least one that’s right for you.”

SCOTLAND’S EILIDH DOYLE SUPPORTS FALKIRK FUN RUN

OLYMPIC medallist Eilidh Doyle supported 237 primary school children in a mass fun run at The Helix on Monday 16 September 2019.

Seven local primary schools took part in the event which was organised by GO Run For Fun and pupils aged between 5 and eleven ran a 2-kilometre route covering the Home of The Kelpies grounds.

Scotland’s most decorated track athlete, Eilidh Doyle was invited as the special guest for the children’s event leading the warm-up routine and getting them ready for the run. Doyle sounded the horn at the start of the run and high-fived the primary pupils as they completed the route.

Doyle commented: “I think it’s great for young children to be around big events like this that promote fun activity, a healthy lifestyle and competitive spirit. A positive experience at a young age allows for a positive and lifelong relationship with being active.

“A nice balanced healthy and active lifestyle is simple and should be fun. It can be something you do with friends or family and shouldn’t feel like a chore.

When asked about how she got into running, Doyle said: “Through primary school I realised I was quite good at running when I won a couple of cross-country events. But it was really down to my big sister Iona, who got asked to join a local athletics club after winning a cross country race, I went with her and loved it.

“It has been such a huge part of my life. I have met so many amazing people, friends and role models. It has also allowed me to learn about myself, my strengths and weaknesses, how to improve and achieve my goals, how to deal with disappointment and how to be independent.”

ZOEY CLARK INSPIRES 600 YOUNGSTERS IN ABERDEEN FUN RUN

ABERDEEN born Zoey Clark supported 680 primary school children across 10 local schools in a mass fun run on 3 September 2019 organised by GO Run For Fun, in partnership with Active Schools.

Sheddocksley Sports Centre played host to the event, where pupils aged 5 to eleven ran a 2 kilometre route covering its outside grounds.

Zoey Clark, 400 metre athlete and part of the British 4 × 400 relay team, winning a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships, was a special guest at the children’s running event. She took the pupils through a fun warm up routine, set them off at the start line and congratulated them as they completed the run.

Clark commented: “I think events like this are so important to give kids opportunities to try new things. The events show kids how enjoyable physical activities can be and gives them experience working towards a goal.

“There are so many types of activities out there and it’s all about finding the right ones that make you feel good.  When you are young it is good to try out lots of different activities to see what you enjoy the most.

When talking about when her interest in athletics began, Clark said: “I started athletics when I was 15, a teacher at school encouraged me to try athletics after seeing me run during other sports at school. Once I went down to the track I knew it was the right sport for me.

“Athletics brought me out of my shell and helped me become a more confident person. It also taught me to work hard for things that you really want and how to manage my time to fit everything in.”

Volunteers from Active Schools and INEOS supported the smooth-running of the event, on hand to help those from Bramble Brae School, Westpark School, Quarryhill School, Manor Park School, Dyce School, Kingsford School, Skene Square Primary School, Heathryburn School, St Joseph’s RC Primary School and St Peters RC Primary School throughout the day.

24 primary schools around Stockton-on-Tees took part in the event, with pupils aged between 5 and 11 running the 2-kilometre route.

Tom also hosted a Q&A session to give the children an opportunity to find out more about his journey so far.

Tom commented: “These are fantastic opportunities for kids to learn that sport can be more than just physical, it can be a great fun social time with their peers.

“Staying active can be really easy if you find something you enjoy doing either on your own or with friends. It doesn’t need to be about who wins, just that you’re having fun in whatever it is you choose.

“I tried gymnastics, athletics, and always loved playing football but was never very good at anything. I just turned up every week, had a coach who encouraged me and enjoyed sport with my friends.

“I joined Tonbridge AC aged 11 and tried race walking for the first time at 12. I don’t think I ever realised my ability until my late teens.

When asked about how athletics had impacted his life, Tom said: “Athletics gave me an opportunity to study and graduate with a degree, it taught me to stand on my own two feet and own my future, train harder when I didn’t succeed and to never stop as you don’t know when the next breakthrough is coming.”

GO RUN FOR FUN AND THE DAILY MILE HOLD FLAGSHIP FUN-RUN EVENT FOR 2,400 UK SCHOOLCHILDREN

GO Run For Fun is the world’s largest children’s running initiative, with over 300,000 children having taken part since its establishment in 2013.

Today, GO Run For Fun, a pupil-led initiative that inspires children to get active through running events, returned to London to host its annual flagship event in Battersea Park.

Over 2,400 children and 45 schools crossed the finish line in the world’s largest children’s running initiative, hosted by GB athlete Jazmin Sawyers and TV presenter Radzi Chinyanganya, alongside special guest, Elaine Wyllie MBE.

The event was in collaboration with The Daily Mile – an initiative to encourage pupils to get active by running or jogging, at their own pace, for 15 minutes every day in school. Of the 45 participating schools, 4 are signed up to The Daily Mile initiative.

GO Run For Fun has been making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of more than 300,000 children worldwide since its launch in 2013. Collectively with The Daily Mile, founded by former headteacher Elaine Wyllie MBE in 2012, the two initiatives have since inspired over two million children to get active.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman of INEOS  said: “We know that the positive experiences we have at a young age shape habits for life – which is why it’s so key to help young children enjoy getting active daily. Running is the simplest, most natural exercise you can do. It’s fun and social, and it helps to teach the basics of a healthy lifestyle.”

GO Run For Fun ambassador, Jazmin Sawyers said: “The GO Run For Fun team are so passionate about encouraging kids to get active and honestly it’s contagious, I couldn’t help but love it! All the kids ran 2km in the sunshine and all had a great time doing it. They all inspired me and gave me an enlightening reminder of how fun exercise can be!”

Elaine Wyllie MBE, founder of The Daily Mile said: “It’s amazing to see so many children making an active step towards improving their health & wellbeing through taking part in The Daily Mile and GO Run For Fun initiatives!”

Alongside attendance from Jazmin and Radzi, children were also treated to a live performance from The Voice Kids UK winner Jess Folley who also helped participants make their way around the 2km route.

TWO THOUSAND PRIMARY PUPILS TAKE ON HULL FUN RUN

Hull Ionians Rugby Club played host to two children’s mass running events on 24 and 25 April 2019, with 2450 primary school pupils taking part.

Children aged between five and 11 from 31 local schools across the Humber took part in the free fun run, covering a distance of two kilometres each.

Organised by running initiative GO Run For Fun and in partnership with Active Humber, this is the second consecutive year that the event has taken place in Hull, and is part of a series of events organised across the UK in 2019.

Laura Weightman, 1500 metre athlete and finalist in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, was the ambassador for the events and showed her support by delivering warm ups with the children, hosting Q&A sessions and cheering on the runners.

Laura commented: “These events are great for kids, bringing everyone together to have a fun morning being active. It’s great that I can come to an event to share some of my experiences and inspire the kids to be active.

“I started running at the age of 12, running cross country races for my school which I loved. I then joined my running club to train and do more races. I always enjoyed being active from a young age and tried lots of sports when I was younger including dancing, karate, football and hockey.

When asked what advice she would give to young children about staying active and healthy, Laura said:

“Find a sport or activity that you enjoy doing, it’s important to have fun. Having fun and enjoying what you do will make you want to keep doing it.”

The participants were also joined by two Hull FC rugby league players, Albert Kelly and Danny Washbrook, who have played for the club for a number of years.

Talking about the events, Danny said: “Events like this promote an active lifestyle and show the benefits of exercise and to me are highly important for young people.”

Local volunteers from Fitmums & Friends, Absolutely Cultured, Cottingham High School and Uniformed Services from North Lindsey College also gave up their time to support the events.

GO Run For Fun, which is run in partnership with the Great Run series, is aiming to get a total of 350,000 children running by the end of the 2019, up from 280,000 in 2018, by organising a total of 11 mass running events across the UK.

Tom O’Brien, event manager at GO Run For Fun, said: “We had such a good time at the event last year that we’re excited to be coming back and getting even more children active. Having two events in Hull this year has allowed us to double the number of children taking part from last year’s event.

“Sport England’s recent findings state that enjoyment is the biggest driver of activity levels for children. GO Run For Fun events are all about enjoyment, the runs aren’t timed or competitive, we want to encourage being active and try to make it fun for everyone.”

Jo McDonald, county sports partner at Active Humber added: “Last year we had 1300 children enjoy taking part in the Humber event, so we are delighted to be able to extend the event over two days, and give so many more pupils the chance to enjoy GO Run For Fun.

“We hope it can help us in Active Humber’s mission – to make the Humber a place where everyone, every day is physically active.”

The initiative is supported by INEOS, a multinational company headquartered in London, with health and fitness at the heart of its ethos.

INEOS Chairman, Jim Ratcliffe, is deeply passionate about running. He said: “It has never been more important to support young people in leading healthier, more active lives.

“GO Run for Fun and The Daily Mile have been making a positive impact on the health and well-being of hundreds of thousands of children in the UK and beyond for the last four years. We are very proud to support these two initiatives and everyone who runs in them.”
