More than 1,000 primary school children from across the Island came together on Thursday 25th October at Nobles Park to take part in a 2km fun run. The event was organised and delivered by the initiative GO Run For Fun.
Working in partnership with Isle of Man Athletics, this is the fourth time the GO Run For Fun campaign has come to the Island. This time around the 2km run saw a total of 7 schools come together; Onchan, Willaston, Jurby, St Johns, Henry Bloom Noble, St Marys RC and Ashley Hill.
The GO Run For Fun campaign is the biggest children’s running initiative in the world, having encouraged more than 275,000 children, across 10 countries, to get running.
Youth Event Executive, Alex Fothergill, said: “We’re delighted to bring GO Run For Fun back to the Isle of Man this year”
“Here at GO Run For Fun we feel that it’s important for children to experience a positive sporting experience to show them that exercise doesn’t have to be boring. With childhood obesity levels rising, it’s more important now than ever to encourage the youth of today to get more active”
“Our events really try to emphasise the fun in running, including lots of music and dancing. It’s also why our events are not timed; the children can run, jog or walk the 2km route”
“All schools that take part in the event will also receive our new health and wellbeing resources. A pupil led programme which consist of 6 different missions to help encourage the children to make healthier lifestyle choices.”
The programme is supported by INEOS, a multinational company headquartered in London, with health and fitness at the heart of its ethos.
INEOS Chairman and CEO, Jim Ratcliffe, is deeply passionate about running. He said: “It has never been more important to support young people in leading healthier, more active lives.
“GO Run for Fun and The Daily Mile have been making a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of children in the UK and beyond for the last four years. We are very proud to support these two initiatives and everyone who runs in them.”
